I’ve never worked retail, or in an office. My entire career has been in the hospitality industry.

I currently work as a Duty Manager at a CBD hotel. Some days I think I’ve seen it all. I’ve dealt countless times with the fire brigade (all false alarms), the ambulance, and the police. I’ve seen guests evicted for drug use, escorted out in handcuffs. Rooms messed up so badly it took housekeeping three hours to clean.

I don’t judge, but I’ve seen guests having affairs, guests hiding from spouses, younger guests who have run away from home. Guests who get so angry at me they’ve thrown pens at me. Swearing at me because they didn’t read the terms & conditions. Most of it is second nature to me, and it’s just another day at the hotel.

But still, even though I think I’ve seen it all, something or someone will come along, just to mess with us. That’s the thing about my job. Every day is the same.. But also completely different.

I’m not going to say where I work. Or my real name. But – and those in the industry will agree with me – half the shit I come across will happen at every hotel. People just don’t realise it when they are guests.
